To be eligible to become a US citizen, an individual must generally meet the following requirements:

  1. Age: The individual must be at least 18 years old.

  2. Permanent residence: The individual must be a permanent resident of the United States, with a green card, for at least five years (three years if married to a US citizen).

  3. Physical presence: The individual must have lived in the United States continuously for at least five years (three years if married to a US citizen).

  4. Good moral character: The individual must have demonstrated good moral character. There are certain crimes that can cause someone to become ineligible for citizenship; however, each person is looked at individually and taken on a case-by-case basis.
