Crimes that Could Possibly Prevent Citizenship

It is important to note that the only crimes that definitely prevent one from obtaining citizenship are murder and aggravated felonies. Each person is looked at individually.

  • Operating or participating in an illegal vice activity like prostitution.

  • Fraud

  • Committing any crimes related to illegal drugs unless it involved less than 30 grams of marijuana. However, it should be noted that being a part of the marijuana industry can make an applicant fail on the moral character portion of the application.

  • Obtaining a majority of one’s income from illegal gambling.

  • Being convicted of 2 or more gambling crimes.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Service will judge whether or not a naturalization applicant has demonstrated good moral character. These are not necessarily the only things that an applicant can do to be denied. If someone has more questions or concerns, they should contact an immigration attorney.
