The English Proficiency Test
To test your understanding of the English language, your interviewer may ask you questions about your application form. It is a good idea to review your application before your appointment.
For the Reading Portion of the test, you will be asked to read 3 different English sentences off a screen. You must read at least 1 of 3 correctly to pass the test.
For the Writing portion of the test, your interviewer will read a sentence out loud. You will then be asked to write it down on the screen. You will be read 3 different sentences and must write at least 1 of them correctly. You will have to write with a stylus on a tablet. If you have trouble using the stylus or tablet during your interview, you should let your interviewer know.
The Civics Test
The Civics Test is taken out loud. You will be asked 10 questions about US history and government and must get 6 of 10 correct to pass.
You can see a full list of the questions that you may be asked by clicking the following link. However, we do not recommend this as a study technique because it is important to actively answer questions and track your progress.
We recommend that you start studying for the exam as soon as possible. If you fail twice you will be forced to wait 2 months before being able to take the test again.
Studying Resources for the Civics Test
USCIS: Civics Test Study Tools is an app that can be found on the App Store and Google Play Store. It is a great way to study from anywhere. It should be noted that some questions that you may be asked are not on the app. These questions depend on where you live. You should know your state’s senators and your districts representative.
